RRAC's LSUS advances to NAIA Women's Tournament second round after defeating Benedictine

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (March 13, 2025) – No. 7 LSU Shreveport routed No. 10 Benedictine (Kan.) in the first round of the NAIA National Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. The 76-63 victory sends the Pilots to the Campbellsville Bracket Championship game against Campbellsville on March 14 at 2 p.m.(central) The Eagles end their season with an overall record of 17-9. The Pilots improve to 28-4.
 
The Eagles took the first lead at 2-0 and were ahead 4-2 until Katie Ambrose's three-pointer put LSUS up 5-4. The Pilots kept the lead for the rest of the first period, finishing 16-9. With under five minutes in the half, LSUS led 24-15 before Elaina Burns' layup extended the lead to 11. Esra Sen's three-pointer closed the half, putting LSUS ahead 34-24.
 
A pair of three-pointers from the Bulldogs led to an 8-0 run threatened the Pilots with less than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Pilots finally scored their first points of the period, which sparked the offense to a 42-30 lead.
 
Benedictine went on a 12-1 run, capped with Hattie Gros' made three-pointer, which got her team to within one at 43-42. The Pilots got back on track after a three-pointer from Selma Markisic moved the team to a double-digit lead again. After three straight missed three-pointers from the Bulldogs, the Pilots ended the period with a 56-42 lead. LSUS kept a respectable lead through the end of the game to secure the 76-63 win.
 
Individual leaders
 
Kelli Storck led the Bulldogs with 19 points and seven rebounds. Riley Bruggeman scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
 
Selma Markisic commanded the offense with 19 points for the Pilots. She added three assists and three steals. Toni Coleman scored 11 points, while Katie Ambrose came off the bench to score 10 points.
 
Team totals
 
Benedictine tallied 34.4 percent from the field, 20 percent from three-point range, 75 percent from the free throw line, 40 rebounds, 16 assists, and 13 steals.
 
The Pilots shot 40.9 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from three-point range, and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line. LSUS added 28 rebounds, 20 assists, 17 steals, and seven blocks.

Looking ahead, LSUS aims to advance to the 45th Annual Women's Basketball National Championship, scheduled for March 19-24 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
