Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
April 22, 2008


WACO, Texas –
Sasha Long of Bacone College (Okla.) and Tana Park of Texas Wesleyan University earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week award for April 14-20, while Ashley Westerman of Northwood University (Texas) was honored with the RRAC’s weekly pitcher award for the same dates.

Long, a sophomore shortstop from Pryor, Okla., was 11-for-18 at the plate in six games for the Lady Warriors last week. She started the week with a 3-for-3 game with two home runs and seven RBIs to knock off Oklahoma Baptist University, 16-2. Long added another homer and drove in two runs as Bacone lost to East Central University (Okla.), 8-6, in the same tournament. Overall, she scored nine runs with three homers, three walks and nine RBIs as Bacone moved to 17-5 in the conference and 27-27 on the season.

Park, a sophomore rightfielder from Glen Rose, Texas, spurred the Lady Rams to a 4-0 week with 10 runs scored and five RBIs. She went 8-for-11 in a doubleheader sweep over Jarvis Christian College (Texas), driving in five runs. Park also scored three runs in a doubleheader against College of the Southwest (N.M.). For the week, she was 10-of-19 batting (.526) with six stolen bases. TWU rose to 11-7 in the RRAC and 12-27 overall.

Westerman, a junior pitcher from Godley, Texas, earned victories for the Lady Knights in both ends of a doubleheader with CSW. In the opener, she scattered five hits over seven innings as Northwood won, 6-0. She followed with 5 1/3 innings of work in which she allowed one run on six hits as the Lady Knights held on for the 9-7 win. In all, she struck out 12 hitters and allowed only three walks. Northwood remains atop the RRAC standings with a mark of 20-4 and a record of 29-18 for the season.

Northwood’s Katie Pfannerstill and CSW’s Lea Santos were additional player of the week nominees. Bacone’s Robin Chriestenson and TWU’s Ashley Tarrant were also nominated for pitcher of the week.
