Torres, a senior second baseman from Caguas, P.R., powered the Warriors to a 5-0 week with a pair of home runs and eight RBIs. He was 8-of-18 at the plate (.444) including a 3-for-4 outing with a homer and two RBIs in a 14-6 win over the University of Texas at Brownsville. Torres drove in three runs with a homer in the previous game as Bacone won over UTB, 9-7. He scored five runs on the week and was 5-of-6 on stolen base attempts. The Warriors improved to 11-2 on the season. Ward, a freshman pitcher/infielder from Fort Worth, Texas, tossed a one-hitter to earn the win, 6-1, over Hillsdale Baptist College (Okla.). He allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work with five strikeouts and a walk. The only hit against Ward came in the first inning before he proceeded to retire the next 12 hitters. Hillsdale’s only run scored on an error. The Lions won both of their games last week to move to 4-8 overall. Jeremy Macklin of Huston-Tillotson University (Texas) and Blake Walker of Texas Wesleyan University were additional player of the week nominees. TWU’s Hayden Lackey and Bacone’s Zach Wallis were nominated for this week’s pitcher award. -RRAC- |
